OpenAI is getting ready to flip a controversial switch. Its long-delayed “adult mode” for ChatGPT is reportedly moving closer to launch, and the details are finally becoming clearer.

But here’s the thing — if you were imagining something raunchy on every level, dial expectations back. Way back.

Text-Only Erotica, Not Visual Pornography

According to The Wall Street Journal, an unnamed OpenAI spokesperson described the upcoming feature as “smut” rather than pornography. That’s a meaningful distinction.

At launch, ChatGPT’s adult mode will support text-based conversations with adult themes. Image generation, voice, and video capabilities won’t be included. So users can engage in suggestive written chats, but nothing more visual than that.

This keeps OpenAI on safer legal ground, too. The UK’s Online Safety Act, for instance, requires age verification for pornographic images. Written erotica falls outside that requirement. So text-only makes regulatory sense, even if it feels like a half-measure.

Why the Rollout Got Delayed

OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman first announced adult mode back in October, promising “erotica for verified adults” once the company felt confident about safety guardrails. A launch sometime this quarter seemed likely. Then the delays started piling up.

OpenAI said earlier this month it was pushing the release back to focus on higher-priority tasks. But The Wall Street Journal’s reporting reveals a messier picture underneath that explanation.

Internal concerns ran deep. A council of advisers selected by OpenAI warned the company in January that the feature could be accessible to children and potentially foster unhealthy emotional dependence on the chatbot. One unnamed council member used a stark phrase to describe the risk: a “sexy suicide coach.”

That language is jarring. And it signals just how seriously some people inside OpenAI took the potential downsides.

The Child Safety Problem Is Thorny

Content moderation also hit serious technical walls. Sources told The Journal that OpenAI has been struggling to lift NSFW restrictions on ChatGPT while keeping genuinely harmful content — like scenarios depicting nonconsensual behavior or child sexual abuse — firmly blocked.

The age-verification system makes things even more complicated. OpenAI developed age-prediction technology to keep minors away from adult content. At one point, that system was misclassifying minors as adults about 12 percent of the time.

That number matters more when you consider the scale. ChatGPT attracts around 100 million users under 18 every single week. A 12 percent error rate could theoretically funnel millions of minors into sexualized conversations with no warning.

An unnamed OpenAI spokesperson acknowledged the gap, telling The Journal that their age-prediction performance is “similar to the rest of the industry” but will “never be completely foolproof.” That’s honest. It’s also not exactly reassuring.

How This Stacks Up Against the Competition

OpenAI’s cautious text-only approach looks notably restrained compared to what rivals are already doing. Grok, xAI’s AI assistant from Elon Musk, already offers what the company calls “spicy” companion experiences. Last week, Musk announced that Grok’s image and video generator can produce anything “allowed in an R-rated movie.”

That’s a very different posture. And it puts OpenAI in an interesting spot — threading the needle between competing with more permissive platforms and avoiding the regulatory and ethical backlash that could follow a high-profile moderation failure.

No new release timeline has been announced yet for ChatGPT’s adult mode. The company hasn’t confirmed when the feature will actually go live.

Watching how OpenAI navigates this rollout will be fascinating. They’re essentially trying to open a door just wide enough to compete, while making sure some very serious harms can’t walk through it. That’s a hard balance to get right, and frankly, they haven’t gotten there yet.
